Making Music in LA Since 2012

Each year, on June 21st, we celebrate Make Music Day by asking you to tune up your instruments and MAKE MUSIC! We have been celebrating Make Music LA since 2012 and thank everyone who’s contributed along the way.

A free celebration of music and its power to bring communities together, Make Music Day was launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique. It is now held on the same day in more than 1200 cities in 120 countries.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.

A Message From Our Founder

Make Music LA Returns! Music the Universal Language

Music heals and this Make Music Day musicians of all ages and skill levels from around the world will unite for a day of community connection, collaboration, and mentorship, participating in thousands of free music-making events on June 21st.

Our theme this year is Music the Universal Language. Although we might not understand lyrics in another language, we can keep time with the music and we can feel the intent of the composer with rhythm and mood.

Music has the ability to bring people together. Our differences melt away and we find ourselves transformed by awakening our emotions, stirring and moving us to tears of joy, or deeply reflective. Most of our lives are punctuated by music. Music tells the story of time and takes us to the lands of our ancestors through instrumentation and traditional music passed down for generations.

Los Angeles, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world has more than 200 languages spoken by residents. We have music gold here and Make Music Day promises to share the international flavor of our vast communities covering the approximately 469 square miles with an estimated 9.86 million residents as of 2022. It is the 4th most visited city in the United States with over 2.7 million visitors annually.

Make Music Day is our opportunity to show off with the exceptional talent yet to be discovered, students, amateurs and professionals playing music outdoors in communities.

Register as a musician if you’d like to play or as a venue if you have a location to host musicians.

We look forward to seeing you at a concert on June 21st.

“Make Music LA is more than just a day of free concerts. It’s about engaging our children and their families, to transform lives through music.”
